Slug Control with Phasmarhabditis

Arguably a gardeners number one pest! They feed on a wide range of plants causing severe damage on older plants and killing young plants.

Slug nematodes are a pesticide-free alternative of keeping slugs under control by introducing parasitic nematodes (Phasmarhabditis sp.)

The parasitic nematode, Phasmarhabditis sp. is used as a non-chemical means of control. These nematodes are harmless to plants, pets and the wider environment.

Although best applied to bare soil, they can be used on existing crops, ornamentals or containerised plants. Edible crops can be picked immediately after application, there is no harvest interval.

These UK native, microscopic worms feed and multiply inside the slug. The infected slugs tend to hide underground where they stop feeding and die. Supplied as an easy-to-mix powder to be diluted with water before use.

Easy to apply just mix in water (as per instructions) and apply to moist compost/soil using a watering can or sprayer.

Apply between March and October. A second or third application may be advisable at 6-8 weeks intervals.

Small Pack treats 40 sq.m (12 million)

Large Pack treats 100 sq.m (30 million)

Instructions for use

Control of Slugs with Nematodes

The parasitic nematode, Phasmarhabditis sp. is used as a non-chemical means of control. These nematodes are harmless to plants, pets and the wider environment. Although best applied to bare soil, they can be used on existing crops, ornamentals or containerised plants. Edible crops can be picked immediately after application, there is no harvest interval.

Follow instructions as above but use the following dilution rates

When to treat

Any time from March to October when soil temperatures are above 5°C. Try to apply in the evening, or in dull, cloudy weather to avoid exposure to bright sunlight.

How to treat

It is vital to apply to moist soil/compost as the nematodes are unable to move in dry conditions.

Mix the nematodes in clean water, stir, dilute if necessary and apply immediately using a watering can, sprayer (remove any filters, nozzle aperture must be at least 1mm) or hose-end feeder.

See below for detailed instructions.

A hose end dilutor, specially designed to apply nematodes accurately and simply for the control of slugs, vine weevil, chafers and leatherjackets, is available from Agralan.

Water again and keep the soil moist for 14 days.

The small pack (12 mil) will treat an area of 40sq.m, the large pack (30 mil) will treat an area of 100sq. m.

Storage

The unopened pack may be stored in the salad drawer of a fridge (5°C) but must be used by the expiry date on pack.  Do not freeze.  Once opened, the entire pack contents should be used immediately.

 Application with a watering can

Quarter fill a clean bucket with cool/tepid water.  Open the tray of nematodes and tip the entire contents into the water.

Small (12 million) pack, to treat 40sq.m

Stir to disperse the nematodes, add water to bring up to 4 litres. Transfer 1 litre of the stock solution to a can full of water and apply immediately to 10sq.m of soil.  The solution can be poured onto the soil via the spout, or the can fitted with a coarse rose. Repeat until the stock solution is used up.

Large (30 million) pack, to treat 100sq.m

Stir to disperse the nematodes, add water to bring up to 5 litres. Transfer half a litre of the stock solution to a can full of water and apply to 10sq.m. The solution can be poured onto the soil via the spout, or the can fitted with a coarse rose. Repeat until the stock solution is used up.

Application with a Birchmeier Nematode Applicator
